Screen West Midlands offer up to 100% funding for the course taking place in their region (see dates below).

This two-day course is an in-depth introduces to the creating visual effects on Avid Xpress Pro and Avid Xpress DV editing systems. Topics include: creating multilayered effects, keyframing effects, creating effect templates, working with AVX plug-in effects, creating motion effects and timewarp effects, nesting layers, and working with the Xpress 3D effects. Class time is divided between demonstration and hands-on-practice.

Class time is divided between demonstration and hands-on-practice.

The course is 50% taught and 50% hands-on with no more than two students per editing system. The course can only be provided by an Avid Certified Trainer.

Students keep their own copy of the detailed training notes that form the structured content for the 129 course to give a set of reminders to students of what they have covered. The course for Xpress DV 3.5 and Xpress Pro is basically the same, so if you are currently using version 3.5, version 3.0 or even version 2.0, you will still find this course very useful.

The course assumes that you are familiar with the Windows or Macintosh computer system software. Whichever operating system you use, you should be familiar with the user interface and basic navigational tools.

The Avid 129 Introduction to Avid Xpress Pro Effects course is usually only provided to groups of no more than 6 students. This means that courses get booked up quickly.

Because class sizes are small, there is more time for the trainer to deal with queries from individual students without slowing the class down too much. The inclusion of practical hands-on exercises allows students to really develop confidence applying the techniques they are shown.

By the end of the Avid 129 Introduction to Avid Xpress Pro Effects course, participants should feel confident to work with effects inside of Avid and really understand the principles of key-framing, layering, nesting/combing effects, effect templates and more.

Like the Avid 119 course, the 129 Effects course is modular and covers the following topics:

Module 1: Introduction to Effects

Different types of effect, how to apply and remove effects or multiple effects, accessing the effects editor, using realtime effects and rendering plus transition effects.

Module 2: AVX Plug-in Effects

Avid has support for video effects using the AVX plug-in format. These effects often have unique controls but will always follow certain generic patterns of use. This module explains how they integrate with Avid and includes examples provided by Avid.

Module 3: Vertical Effects

This module deals with effects which layer video such as Picture in Picture and super-imposing. Students learn how the timeline tracks relate to one another and how to control the motion and positioning of layered effects.

Module 4: Motion Effects

Avid include Timewarp effects now, which allow you to control the speed of playback on the timeline. This module explains the different options, render modes and field interpolation. It also explains the traditional motion effects accessible from the source monitor - and why you would chose to use them.

Module 5: Nesting Effects

Nesting is the excellent way Avid allows you to combine effects without cluttering up the interface or losing flexible control of your effect settings. This module explains how and why to nest and the different ways of accessing your nested effects once you have made them.

Module 6: Introduction to the 3D Warp Effect

This module gives detailed explanation of the various controls for 3D video effects within the Avid interface, processing order and rendering. The 3D warp effect makes use of the computer system's OpenGL support and this is explained here.

Module 7: Working with Shapes

Shapes are an extension of the 3D picture in picture tool and this module explains their controls.

Module 8: Additional 3D Warp Parameters

Taking the 3D warp effects controls to the next level, this module explains the additional controls and demonstrates their impact in the edited sequence.

Each module has an exercise associated with it so trainees can get first hand practise using the skills they have been taught.
